Should I Get Titanium or Zirconia Dental Implants?

Modern dentistry touts dental implants as the best way to replace missing teeth, and that is entirely true. However, many people do not realize that there are dozens of different ways in which the dental implant procedure can be performed. There are also several different types of dental implants in Hamden, including ones made out of zirconia and ones made out of a titanium alloy. Is one material better than the other? Let’s discuss what they are and some of the benefits they each offer.

What They Are

Implants made out of a titanium alloy are constructed mostly of titanium. However, the titanium is mixed with small amounts of other metals to increase the strength and flexibility of the implant.

Zirconia dental implants are a relatively new addition to modern dentistry. They are composed out of a white ceramic material. Although they are commonly referred to as being “metal-free,” it is important to note that they do have trace amounts of metal in them.

Advantages of Titanium Implants

Some key advantages of titanium dental implants include:

  • They are stronger than zirconia, so the chances of them fracturing are next to nothing.
  • They feature two-piece construction. That means that the implant can stay beneath the gumline while it bonds with the bone around it (a process called osseointegration). Later, an abutment gets attached to the top of the implant in order to support a crown, bridge, or denture. Zirconia implants feature one-piece construction, which means part of the implant must stay above the gumline during osteointegration.
  • They have a proven track record of success. Titanium implants have been around for much longer than zirconia ones, and many studies support their effectiveness as a long-term tooth replacement solution.

Advantages of Zirconia Implants

Some noteworthy advantages of zirconia implants include:

  • Titanium implants can sometimes give the gums a slightly grayish appearance. Zirconia implants are white in color and may produce more natural aesthetics.
  • Because they have very little metal in them, zirconia implants are often favored by individuals who are concerned about metal sensitivities or allergies. (It is important to note that titanium allergies are extremely rare.)
  • They have a lower risk of corrosion than titanium.

Is One Better Than the Other?

Both titanium and zirconia implants offer outstanding advantages, and the risks involved with both materials are minimal. However, one or the other may be better for your unique situation. Your dentist is the best person to help you decide which type of implant you should receive. Before they make a recommendation, they will carefully consider both your oral health and your personal preferences. Hopefully, it will not be long before you are enjoying all the many benefits of implant-supported tooth replacement!
