On their own, they can accomplish quite a bit! However, they need help in some cases. That is where Invisalign attachments come into the picture. What exactly are they, and will it hurt when you get them placed or removed? This blog post explains what you should know.

What Are Invisalign Attachments?

Invisalign attachments are small, tooth-colored bumps made of composite resin (similar to the material used for tooth-colored fillings). Your dentist bonds them to certain teeth so your aligners can grip them with more control. Think of them as tiny handles that help your trays guide each tooth in the right direction. They can aid with turns, lifts, shifts, and other movements that smooth aligners might not be able to accomplish.

You might need one attachment, several, or none at all. The number and shape depend on your treatment plan and the way your teeth need to move. Because the material matches your tooth shade, attachments tend to look subtle.

The Process of Placing and Removing Invisalign Attachments

To place attachments, your dentist first cleans and dries your teeth. A special template helps mark the exact spots where the attachments belong. After the attachments are in place, a curing light hardens them so they stay secure during treatment. This process is quick, and it does not usually require local anesthesia.

When the attachments are no longer needed, your dentist removes them with a special tool that buffs the composite away from the tooth surface. After that, the enamel is polished until it feels smooth. The process should not harm healthy enamel. You may feel vibration or light pressure, but you should not expect sharp pain.

What Do the Attachments Feel Like?

At first, the attachments may feel odd against your lips or cheeks when your aligners are out. You may notice small bumps on your teeth with your tongue. Once your trays snap over them, the fit may feel tight. Even if that causes slight discomfort, remember that the attachments are helping your treatment work!

Invisalign attachments can make your treatment more precise! Talk to your dentist if you have questions about them or how they will affect your experience.

Meet the Practice

At New Haven Dental Group, we are proud to provide high-quality Invisalign treatment.
