Ancient Cosmetic Dentistry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is evidence to indicate that as far back as 700 BCE, the Etruscans attempted to replace missing teeth with some unusual materials, including ivory and bone. They even tried to use teeth from deceased humans and animals!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancient Egyptians were also eager to enhance their smiles. They made crowns and bridges out of gold, and they tried to replace lost teeth with seashells hammered into their gums. They even used a mixture of pumice and vinegar to remove dental stains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Rome, people used their own urine to whiten their teeth. That might sound absurd, but it was actually effective because ammonia can break up stains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medieval Cosmetic Dentistry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the Middle Ages, dentistry was usually a task performed by barbers. They would sometimes file teeth and place a coating on them to make them whiter. Unfortunately, the coating destroyed teeth over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also during medieval times, Europeans brought back some ancient cosmetic dentistry practices, such as the custom of using bone and ivory to make dentures. They also made another attempt at using teeth from deceased humans to replace lost dentition. As you might imagine, they enjoyed virtually no success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Emergence of Modern Cosmetic Dentistry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the 1700s and beyond, dentistry made great strides forward. For example, porcelain came to the fore as a suitable material for restorations and tooth replacement. Plastic materials and acrylic also became common in dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 20th<\/sup> century, cosmetic dentistry really started to take off. Veneers were first invented in the 1930s, and in the 1980s, they started to become widely available due to advancements in the techniques used to adhere them to teeth. Also in the 1980s, carbamide peroxide started to be used as a means for whitening teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
