And if sedation <em>is <\/em>right for you, which <em>type <\/em>of\nsedation would best fit your circumstances? In this blog post, we compare two\npopular sedation options: oral vs nitrous oxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are They? How Do They Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Oral conscious sedation <\/strong>involves the use of a pill.You take the medication shortly before your dental appointment, and it\nproduces a calm, relaxed sensation. You will remain alert enough to respond to\ndirections and questions from your dentist. If you drift off to sleep, it\nshould be easy to awaken you with a gentle shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nitrous oxide <\/strong>is a clear gas that is administered\nthrough a nasal mask. As soon as you breathe it in, it produces a relaxed\nfeeling. You might also feel a bit giddy, which is why nitrous oxide is\notherwise known as \u201claughing gas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages of Oral Conscious Sedation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Oral conscious sedation comes with some unique advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is more powerful than nitrous oxide. It is\ntherefore the preferred form of sedation for many types of major procedures,\nsuch as wisdom tooth removal or root canal therapy.<\/li><li>It often produces short-term memory loss. Many\npatients like that they are not able to remember their time in the dentist\u2019s\noperatory.<\/li><li>No masks or needles are necessary to administer\nit.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advantages of Nitrous Oxide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nitrous oxide also provides some wonderful benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Its effects wear off quickly. Therefore,\npatients are able to drive themselves home after their appointment.<\/li><li>The dentist can adjust the flow of nitrous oxide\nduring the procedure to make the sedation lighter or heavier.<\/li><li>It is safe for most patients, and the side\neffects are usually quite mild. If you do experience side effects, they should\nwear off within a day or two of your treatment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which Is Right for Me?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The type of sedation that is right for you will depend on a\nfew factors. If you are getting major dental treatment, oral conscious sedation\nmay be better for you. If you just want something to help you relax while you\nreceive a filling or a cleaning, you might want to request nitrous oxide\ninstead. Your dentist will recommend the type of sedation that is generally\nbest for the type of procedure you are undergoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are effective\nmeans of relaxation during dental treatment.
